Frequently Asked Questions

How do I receive updates about YCF practices and competitions?
Coach Gordon sends out official team communication through email. To be added to the contact list for a particular group, simply fill out the form here.

Can my child try out a practice before signing up?
Yes, prospective players are allowed to attend practice for one week on a trial basis. Email Head Coach Andrew Gordon at agordon@cfymca.org to set up a time to come try it out.

How well does my child need to be able to swim?
The specific requirements are different for each level. If your child is able to swim 25 yard in a continuous freestyle stroke and tread water for 30 seconds they will qualify to participate in most levels of YCF Water Polo. The swim requirements for Splashball are more lax since beginners are allowed to use flotation devices, and they are more intensive for the high school level.

Can my child join the team even if they have no water polo experience?
Yes, the majority of YCF players begin with no prior experience. As long as they can meet a basic swimming requirement, our coaches will teach them the skills they need to play the game.

What equipment does my child need?
Athletes need a swimsuit, towel, goggles and swim cap (girls) for practice. Athletes above the Splashball (beginner) level will need to purchase a team suit and t-shirt to be worn at competitions. Girls will also need a light and dark team cap. A team uniform can be purchased from Coach Andy.

Are YMCA memberships required?
Yes, except for the Splashball Level. Only current YMCA members can join the YCF's 10U, Middle School, or High School Club. Speak with the membership desk at your local YMCA Family Center for more information about pricing and options.

Does my child need to be a USA Water Polo member?
Yes, your child must be a current USA Water Polo member or you will be unable to compete with the team. To become a member of USA Water Polo or renew your membership visit the USA Water Polo website.

Are competitions mandatory?
No, athletes that practice with YCF are not required to participate in competitions. However, competitions are strongly encouraged because they are a crucial part of a player's development.
